The Indian passenger vehicle segment has experienced significant volume growth, driven by factors such as GST rate cuts, an extended summer wedding season, and strong demand for newly launched models. ICRA projects a 4.6% expansion in passenger vehicle industry volumes for FY27, anticipating sustained demand momentum. Despite concerns over a weak monsoon outlook and the West Asia crisis, wholesale and retail volumes of passenger vehicles saw robust growth in April on a year-on-year basis.
Wholesale volumes of passenger vehicles surged by 25% year-on-year to 4.4 lakh units in April, with original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) maintaining steady production to meet domestic demand. Retail sales also showed a strong year-on-year growth of 16% in April, driven by the popularity of newly launched models, the extended summer wedding season, and the positive impact of revised GST rates. However, retail volumes decreased sequentially from March 2026 due to increased discounts to boost year-end sales.
According to ICRA, inventory levels for passenger vehicles remained low at 28-30 days in April 2026, a significant improvement from previous years, supported by enhanced retail offerings. Export volumes of passenger vehicles saw a healthy 13% increase in April compared to the previous month, indicating a rise in supply from Indian OEMs. ICRA forecasts a wholesale volume growth of 4-6% for FY27.
