India’s women’s doubles duo, Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand, started their US Open 2026 badminton campaign with a win against Spain’s Paula López and Lucía Rodríguez. The pair, currently ranked 58th globally, secured a tough 21-12, 14-21, 21-13 victory to progress to the pre-quarterfinals of the BWF Super 300 event. Treesa and Gayatri faced a strong challenge from the Spanish opponents but managed to dominate the third game for a decisive win.
The Indian duo’s performance marks a positive step in their comeback journey, especially for Treesa, who recently returned to competition post a three-month injury rehabilitation period. In the next round, Treesa and Gayatri will face Japan’s Sumire Nakade and Miyu Takahashi for a spot in the quarter-finals. Qualifier Rounak Chouhan continued his impressive form in the men’s singles, securing a place in the main draw by defeating Enogat Roy of France and Kuo Kuan-lin of Chinese Taipei in the qualifying rounds. Rounak’s consistent performance, including a quarter-final finish at the recent Macau Open, reflects his growing confidence on the international badminton circuit.
On the upcoming matchday, Indian shuttlers Lakshya Sen, Kidambi Srikanth, and Anmol Kharb will kick off their main draw campaigns at the tournament. However, defending men’s singles champion Ayush Shetty will not be participating in this year’s US Open to defend his title.
