President Droupadi Murmu congratulated the Indian women’s football team for their victory in the SAFF Women’s Championship 2026. India secured the title by defeating Bangladesh 3-1 in a thrilling final held at the Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Margao, Goa. The President praised the team’s performance and highlighted the significance of their win in inspiring young female athletes nationwide.
Pyari Xaxa scored the opening goal for India in the 42nd minute, with Ritu Porna Chakma equalizing just before halftime. Sanfida Nongrum quickly regained the lead for the team early in the second half, while Lynda Kom Serto sealed the victory with a goal in the 82nd minute. This victory marked India’s sixth SAFF Women’s Championship title, showcasing their exceptional skill and teamwork.
The achievement was met with emotional scenes as players and staff celebrated India’s return to the top of South Asian women’s football. Sanfida Nongrum, a key player in the tournament, displayed her emotions by dropping to her knees after the final whistle. Dangmei Grace, another prominent figure in Indian women’s football, announced her retirement after the match, culminating her illustrious international career on a high note.
