India’s special economic package of nearly $680 million for Mauritius signifies the deepening strategic and economic partnership between the two nations, as stated by Mauritius’ Minister of Foreign Affairs, Regional Integration, and International Trade, Dhananjay Ramful. This package, comprising grants and concessional lines of credit, highlights the significance India places on its relationship with Mauritius under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership.

Ramful emphasized that the India-Mauritius partnership has expanded into a comprehensive relationship covering various sectors such as infrastructure, capacity building, education, technology, and healthcare. Numerous significant projects in Mauritius have been supported by Indian grants and concessional financing.

The Comprehensive Economic Cooperation and Partnership Agreement (CECPA) has played a pivotal role in enhancing trade and investment ties between India and Mauritius, with bilateral trade reaching around $887 million in recent years. Mauritius has emerged as the second-largest source of foreign direct investment (FDI) into India, reflecting the growing economic collaboration between the two countries.

India and Mauritius are actively engaged in developing new projects following Prime Minister Modi’s visit to Mauritius in 2025, aiming to elevate their partnership further. The minister highlighted ongoing joint projects that will reinforce strategic and economic cooperation between the two nations, fostering mutual growth and development.

Ramful described the India-Mauritius relationship as a model for cooperation within the Global South, particularly in areas like maritime security, healthcare, technology, land transport, and port infrastructure. By collaborating in these sectors, developing countries can work together for shared prosperity and progress, setting a positive example for future partnerships.

Both countries are committed to enhancing maritime cooperation to ensure peace and stability in the Indian Ocean region. Initiatives like MAHASAGAR, information-sharing mechanisms, and joint naval exercises underscore their shared interest in upholding safety, security, and adherence to international law in the Indian Ocean.
