Drones are anticipated to be a swiftly expanding segment in India’s defense landscape, with the tactical drone procurement potential surging from Rs 30-35 billion to nearly Rs 120-140 billion, as per a report. The defense sector in India is entering a phase of sustained growth driven by indigenization, increased defense capital spending, growing exports, and the rapid adoption of advanced technologies, according to the report by PL Capital.
Experts at a defense conference hosted by PL Capital mentioned that around 75% of the Ministry of Defence’s capital procurement is now earmarked for domestic sourcing. This shift presents significant prospects for Indian firms in various sectors such as defense electronics, aerospace, shipbuilding, autonomous systems, semiconductors, and space technologies.
The report forecasts an additional strategic drone opportunity worth Rs 300 billion in the upcoming years. It also highlights that as the defense sector progresses beyond mere platform manufacturing, the focus will shift towards companies developing proprietary technologies, mission-critical software, electronic warfare systems, sensors, and advanced defense electronics.
The evolving battlefield needs have led to a reduction in procurement cycles for drone platforms from five to ten years to approximately six to eighteen months, thereby creating quicker commercialization avenues for local manufacturers, the report stated. While drone hardware might become standardized, the differentiation in the long term will rely on payload capacity, AI-driven autonomy, sensing technologies, electronic warfare resilience, and counter-drone systems.
