India’s economic progress since Independence has set a solid groundwork for achieving its Vision 2047 objective of becoming a developed nation. A recent report emphasized the country’s evolution from a poverty-stricken economy with limited industrial capacity to one of the world’s fastest-growing major economies.
In the last eighty years, India has witnessed a significant rise in GDP per capita, a substantial increase in life expectancy, and a nearly six-fold growth in adult literacy. The nation has also made remarkable technological advancements, transitioning from reliance on kerosene lamps to developing sophisticated capabilities, including a nuclear program.
With a population exceeding 1.4 billion, India’s demographic status offers both opportunities and challenges. The report underscores the need for substantial investments in education, healthcare, skills training, and job creation to harness the potential of the youthful and expanding workforce.
To realize the Vision 2047 agenda, India must ensure a harmonious advancement in economic growth and human development. While income levels have surged in the past two decades, further enhancements in healthcare and education are imperative to elevate living standards and fortify the country’s Human Development Index (HDI) performance.
Policy focus should prioritize medium-term investments in healthcare, education, and nutrition, alongside bolstering data systems for monitoring development outcomes nationwide and supporting underdeveloped regions. The report also highlights India’s endeavors to mitigate risks stemming from its reliance on the US dollar in global trade and finance.
