India’s fertiliser security for farmers is robust, stable, and efficiently handled, with availability consistently surpassing the required amounts for all major fertilisers. The Agriculture Ministry’s update for Kharif 2026 indicates a requirement of 390.54 lakh metric tonnes, with 193.38 LMT available as of Thursday, exceeding the usual stock levels at this time of year. This improvement is attributed to enhanced planning, advance stocking, and effective logistics management.
The supply situation across states remains strong, with availability significantly higher than the demand from April 1 to 30. Urea, DAP, MOP, NPK, and SSP availability outstrips their respective requirements, setting a positive tone for the ongoing kharif season. Despite global cost increases, there has been no change in the retail prices of major fertilisers, ensuring stability for farmers.
Following the West Asia conflict crisis, an additional 78 LMT of fertilisers have been made available, with urea production nearly matching last year’s levels. India has secured 38.07 LMT of urea through global tenders since February, with further tenders issued for DAP, TSP, and ammonium sulphate procurement to maintain ample availability during peak demand periods. Regular reviews by the Department of Fertilisers and empowered Group of Secretaries meetings have addressed most availability challenges.
