The Ministry of Defence announced that the Ophthalmology Department at the Army Hospital Research and Referral (AHRR) achieved a milestone by conducting India’s inaugural 3D Flex Aqueous Angiography with iStent. This innovative procedure, utilizing advanced imaging and minimally invasive glaucoma surgery, was carried out with cutting-edge technology including the Spectralis system and a 3D operating microscope. The integration of 3D Flex Aqueous Angiography with iStent sets a new standard in glaucoma care, offering improved intraoperative imaging and long-term outcomes.

This groundbreaking achievement not only signifies a significant advancement in Indian medicine but also places the Armed Forces Medical Services at the forefront of global ophthalmic care. By providing real-time visualization of aqueous outflow pathways, this procedure enables surgeons to deliver precise interventions, enhancing patient outcomes. The successful execution of this procedure represents a strategic move in ensuring the vision and operational readiness of the Armed Forces community.

The Ministry of Defence highlighted that glaucoma, a major cause of irreversible blindness, has posed challenges due to its silent progression. The innovative 3D Flex Aqueous Angiography with iStent procedure offers a solution by enhancing the understanding of the condition and facilitating targeted interventions for better results. Earlier this year, AHRR made history by becoming the first government institute in India and the second in South Asia to perform Robotic Custom Laser Cataract Surgery, showcasing its commitment to cutting-edge eye care technologies.

The integration of advanced technologies like the ALLY Adaptive Cataract Treatment System at AHRR underscores the Armed Forces’ dedication to providing the most advanced and safe healthcare services to its personnel and their families. The Ophthalmology Department’s foray into robotic, bladeless, and computer-guided eye surgeries with procedures like Femto-second Laser Assisted Cataract Surgery demonstrates a commitment to excellence in eye care.
