India’s gig internet workforce has surpassed 6 million monthly active workers and is projected to reach 17-21 million by 2030, potentially fulfilling 70% of the country’s annual non-farm job creation needs, as per a report by Redseer. Around 30% of these future gig workers are anticipated to be new entrants to the workforce, with gig work serving as an accessible entry point to India’s job market due to its low barriers to entry, flexibility, and autonomy.

The report highlights that gig work is increasingly seen as a valuable opportunity in India, offering a temporary and supplementary earning option. A significant 54% of surveyed workers had not been engaged in paid work before joining gig platforms, indicating the sector’s role in providing employment opportunities to those previously outside the workforce.

Moreover, nearly 70% of gig workers believe that engaging in gig work enhances their future job prospects by equipping them with transferable skills and practical experience that can lead to better opportunities. The gig internet sector currently supports over 6 million monthly active workers across various segments like delivery, ride-hailing, and home services, with an expected compound annual growth rate of 24-29% until 2030.

Platforms are diversifying their presence beyond major cities, extending earning prospects to new workforce entrants, women, and students. Recent observations suggest a shift in India’s gig hiring landscape towards a capability-driven ecosystem, with a rising demand for enterprise-led hiring, talent from Tier-2 cities, and high-skill remote roles. The gig job market is evolving, with white-collar gig positions growing steadily and project-based hiring gaining traction as a mainstream employment model.
