India’s High Commissioner to UK Optimistic About Country’s Sporting Progress

India’s High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, Periasamy Kumaran, expressed confidence in India’s sports development under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership. Speaking at an event supporting Team India for the 2026 Commonwealth Games, Kumaran highlighted the country’s advancing sports ecosystem. He noted the emergence of professional leagues, increased career opportunities for athletes, and initiatives promoting fitness as key factors driving India’s sports growth.

Kumaran emphasized the significance of collaborative efforts from the government, private sector, and educational institutions for sustained success in sports. He pointed out the positive impact of multiple professional leagues in providing viable career options for young athletes in India. The High Commissioner highlighted the growing attention to sports in the country and the expanding range of sports leagues, offering enhanced opportunities for aspiring athletes.

Acknowledging the progress made, Kumaran also highlighted the need for India to further improve its sporting achievements considering its vast population and potential. He stressed the importance of continuous support and sponsorship from various sectors, including government, private enterprises, schools, and colleges, to integrate sports more actively into daily life and the economy. Kumaran underlined the importance of encouraging sports not just for health but also as a community activity.

Looking ahead to the Commonwealth Games, Kumaran expressed hope for India to secure more medals and improve its performance. He anticipated a stronger showing at the upcoming games and emphasized the long-term ambitions of India as it prepares to host the 2030 edition. Kumaran praised Union Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya for organizing a cycling initiative to boost support for Team India and promote healthier lifestyles within the Indian community.
