India’s interim batting coach, Hrishikesh Kanitkar, stressed the importance of players staying true to themselves rather than imitating others while vying for spots in the senior men’s team. Kanitkar advised players to focus on their unique strengths as batters to secure their positions in the team. He highlighted the significance of players being authentic, identifying their strengths, areas for improvement, and embracing their individuality to excel in their roles.
Kanitkar, who also coaches India U-19 men’s team, discussed the shift in coaching philosophy when transitioning from junior to senior setups. He mentioned the rewarding experience of positively impacting young players both on and off the field. Kanitkar acknowledged the advanced skills and experience of senior players, emphasizing the finer aspects of coaching at that level.
Regarding technical aspects, Kanitkar, a former batting coach for the Indian women’s cricket team, emphasized the need for senior players to adapt swiftly to varying conditions due to their extensive exposure to international and domestic cricket. He highlighted the importance of players’ ability to adjust their techniques according to different conditions, underscoring the significance of prior technical groundwork in their development.
Appreciating the performance of the young opening pair, Abhishek Sharma and Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, Kanitkar encouraged them to play freely and trust their abilities. He praised the duo’s skills, mindset, and shot selection, advising them to express themselves on the field to maximize their potential.
