India’s Sports Minister Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya praised weightlifter Rishikanta Singh Chanambam for securing the silver medal in the men’s 60kg event at the Commonwealth Games 2026. Rishikanta’s record-breaking performance in the snatch category opened India’s medal tally on Day 4 of the competition.
Mandaviya took to social media to express pride in Rishikanta’s achievement, stating that the entire nation was proud of his efforts. Rishikanta finished with a combined lift of 264kg, clinching the silver medal behind Malaysia’s Bin Kasdan Mohamad Aniq, while Kenya’s Joshua Amunga Mboya secured the bronze with a total lift of 260kg.
The highlight of Rishikanta’s performance was in the snatch competition where he set a new Commonwealth Games record by successfully lifting 121kg on his final attempt, surpassing the previous mark of 120kg. Although his record was matched by eventual champion Aniq, Rishikanta’s feat set the stage for an intense battle for the gold medal in the clean and jerk.
In the clean and jerk segment, Rishikanta remained in contention with a successful lift of 143kg but fell short in his subsequent attempts at 148kg. Despite his efforts, he ended his campaign with an aggregate of 264kg. Aniq capitalized on the opportunity, securing the gold with a combined total of 273kg and setting a new Commonwealth Games record.
Rishikanta’s silver medal and record-breaking lift in the snatch marked a strong start for India on Day 4 of the competition, with Mandaviya leading the congratulatory messages for the talented weightlifter.
