India’s young wrestlers excelled at the U17 Asian Wrestling Championships in Da Nang, Vietnam, securing two gold, two silver, and one bronze medal. Diksha (43kg) led the charge by winning gold after defeating Asangaryeva (Kyrgyzstan) 6-0 in the final. Garima also secured a gold medal in the 73kg category by overpowering Namuuntsetseg Batbold (Mongolia) 18-6 in the final.
India added two silver medals through Nikita (49kg) and Antra (65kg). Nikita faced defeat against Yuan Yuting (China) in the final, while Antra lost to Siyu Wei (China) in her gold medal bout. Sakshi (57kg) claimed India’s lone bronze by defeating Arina Kuanyshova (Kazakhstan) 10-0 in the medal playoff.
India’s success at the age-group level showcases the emerging talent in women’s wrestling, following a strong performance at the U23 Asian Championships. The Indian men’s freestyle wrestling team also emerged victorious at the U23 Asian Wrestling Championships, securing the Team Championship Trophy with a remarkable first-place finish.
This victory marked a historic moment for Indian wrestling, with the team dominating the freestyle standings. India concluded the tournament with a total of 27 medals across various categories, including eleven gold, seven silver, and nine bronze medals.
