The main event for International Yoga Day 2026 celebrations is scheduled to be held in Kolkata on June 21, as announced by Union Minister for Ayush and Health & Family Welfare, Prataprao Jadhav. This event in Kolkata holds significance following the BJP’s victory in Bengal, ending the Trinamool Congress’ 15-year rule. The theme for this year’s Yoga Day celebrations is “Yoga for Healthy Ageing,” emphasizing the benefits of yoga for physical and mental well-being in older age.
During the Yoga Mahotsav 2026 at the UNESCO World Heritage Site, Khajuraho, the announcement was made, marking the start of the 25-day countdown to IDY 2026. Prataprao Jadhav highlighted that Kolkata, known for its traditional heritage and spiritual essence, will be the focal point of the IDY 2026 celebrations. The theme “Yoga for Healthy Ageing” underscores the essential role of yoga in promoting overall well-being as individuals age, reflecting India’s ancient wisdom in preventive healthcare and balanced living.
Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav, in a virtual message, emphasized the cultural significance of Yoga and Khajuraho in India. He mentioned the increasing acceptance of yoga among the youth, contributing to a healthier and more conscious society. Since its inception as the International Day of Yoga in 2014 by the United Nations, Yoga Day has evolved into a global event promoting the physical, mental, and spiritual advantages of yoga through collective sessions.
