Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Aragchi praised the cooperation between Iran and India regarding the Chabahar Port, calling it a significant symbol. Despite slowdowns due to US sanctions, Aragchi expressed optimism that the port, developed by India, would become a crucial gateway to Central Asia, the Caucasus, and Europe.
Araghchi highlighted the strategic importance of Chabahar Port, emphasizing its potential as a key transit route for various regions. He encouraged India to continue its efforts at the port, underscoring its value for multiple countries. Aragchi also commended India’s positive role in the region, citing its reputation and potential for promoting peace and security.
The Ministry of External Affairs of India previously stated that they are assessing the implications of the US decision to revoke sanctions waivers related to the Chabahar port project. This move by the US could impact activities at the port, which plays a crucial role in India’s connectivity plans.
India and Iran had signed a long-term agreement for Chabahar Port operations, with India committing USD 250 million for infrastructure development. The two countries had plans to connect the port to Iran’s railway network through a 700 km rail line to Zahedan, enhancing regional connectivity.
