Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian cautioned that any assault on Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei would be seen as a declaration of full-scale conflict against the Iranian people. This statement follows escalating verbal clashes with US President Donald Trump. Pezeshkian’s remarks, shared on social media platform X, reflect the heightened tensions after Trump’s recent comments suggesting the need for new leadership in Iran.
The President of Iran attributed the nation’s economic challenges to Washington, pointing to enduring animosity and harsh sanctions imposed by the United States and its allies as the main causes of hardship for Iranians, as reported by Xinhua news agency. The war of words intensified when Khamenei branded Trump a “criminal,” holding him accountable for the casualties and damages incurred during recent domestic unrest in Iran.
Trump, in response, called for a change in leadership in Iran, emphasizing the country’s need for new governance amidst ongoing public protests. He criticized Iran’s current leadership for governing through violence and intimidation, accusing them of using extreme measures to suppress dissent. The US President also blamed Khamenei for what he described as the country’s deterioration and accused him of employing unprecedented levels of violence to stifle opposition.
Tensions between Tehran and Washington have persisted since Trump’s presidency, marked by a policy of “maximum pressure” and frequent verbal clashes between the two administrations.
