Ireland, under the leadership of Ambassador Kevin Kelly, has set enhancing the European Union’s ties with India as a top priority during its Presidency of the Council of the European Union. As the current President, Ireland will oversee negotiations among the EU’s 27 Member States, chair Council meetings, and drive the Union’s legislative agenda for the next six months. Ambassador Kelly expressed optimism about advancing the EU-India Free Trade Agreement and bolstering collaboration in various sectors like trade, technology, research, and maritime security.
During the Irish Presidency, efforts will be focused on finalizing the EU-India Free Trade Agreement, a goal that has been in the works with negotiations completed and legal reviews underway. Ambassador Kelly highlighted the significance of this potential achievement during Ireland’s term. He also emphasized the growing importance of India as a strategic partner for the European Union, with the Presidency program reflecting the EU’s commitment to the Indo-Pacific region and its relationship with India.
Ireland’s eighth term holding the rotating Presidency signifies its dedication to fostering partnership, cooperation, and progress within Europe. The Presidency’s core priorities revolve around Competitiveness, Values, and Security, encapsulated by the motto ‘Strength with Unity.’ Against the backdrop of global changes and challenges, Ambassador Kelly reiterated Ireland’s pledge to collaborate with European allies in building a more competitive, secure, and resilient Europe while upholding democratic values shared by the Union.
