The Ireland cricket team faces a setback as their captain, Paul Stirling, will miss the rest of the T20 World Cup 2026 due to an injury sustained during their first match against Australia. Stirling’s exit was confirmed by Cricket Ireland, with Sam Topping named as his replacement in the squad.
Paul Stirling suffered ligament damage during the match against Australia, leading to his withdrawal from the tournament. The team’s Director of High Performance, Graeme West, mentioned that Stirling will return home for recovery before the upcoming summer season.
Sam Topping, a left-handed opening batter, has been called up to provide cover for Stirling. Topping, who recently played for Ireland A against Afghanistan A, offers versatility to the squad in various positions. Ben Calitz is also nursing an injury, adding to Ireland’s concerns.
Stirling’s unfortunate injury occurred while fielding against Australia, forcing him to retire hurt during the match. Although a new captain has not been officially announced, Vice Captain Lorcan Tucker is expected to take on the leadership role. Ireland will now regroup to face Oman in their next match after a disappointing start to the tournament.
