The ISI has been engaging India in an unconventional battle by leveraging social media to obtain sensitive information. Setting up honeytrap modules for officials is not a new tactic, but Indian agencies have observed an intensified effort by the ISI this time. Pakistan’s focus has shifted towards acquiring information on India’s defense sector in recent operations.
An Intelligence Bureau official highlighted that the ISI’s strategy involves targeting higher-ranking officials who have access to critical information, rather than lower-ranking army personnel. Recent incidents indicate Pakistan’s interest in extracting details on future defense procurements, drone technology, and confidential communications among top defense ministry officials.
Furthermore, the ISI is planning to establish operational centers within India instead of running the module solely from Pakistan. Moles in India have been directed to enlist women from Delhi, the Northeast, and Uttar Pradesh for participation in these activities. The ISI aims to recruit numerous agents across the country, particularly focusing on sensitive areas related to defense sectors.
Since 2018, the ISI has been devising this plan, with modules previously established in Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Gujarat. Despite facing setbacks due to Indian agencies’ interventions, recent months have seen a resurgence in ISI’s activities. The recruitment drive offers substantial financial incentives to potential agents, reflecting the significant budget allocated by the ISI for this operation.
Indian intelligence agencies are on high alert, actively working to thwart the ISI’s elaborate scheme and safeguard classified information from potential breaches.
