Italy’s ICC Men’s T20 World Cup debut took a hit as captain Wayne Madsen dislocated his left shoulder while fielding against Scotland at Eden Gardens. Harry Manenti assumed the captaincy after Madsen’s injury, with Scotland setting a record 207/4 total, the first associate nation to achieve 200+ in the T20 World Cup.
Madsen sustained the injury while fielding at midwicket, trying to stop a powerful shot from George Munsey. He was immediately taken off the field for medical attention, with concerns raised about possible concussion and neck injuries in addition to the shoulder problem. Italy Cricket later confirmed Madsen’s injury, ruling him out of the match and expressing disappointment at the setback.
The 42-year-old, Italy’s most experienced player, was making his T20 World Cup debut and was set to lead the team in the tournament. With a standard shoulder dislocation sidelining players for one to three weeks, Madsen’s absence could be significant. His captaincy role was a result of Joe Burns’ exclusion from the squad for the 2026 T20 World Cup.
