External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar emphasized the necessity of credible and reformed multilateralism in today’s interconnected and multipolar world during the BRICS Foreign Ministers’ Meeting. He highlighted the importance of expanding the United Nations’ permanent and non-permanent categories for enhanced effectiveness. Jaishankar also urged for reforms in international financial architecture to make Multilateral Development Banks more responsive and accessible for development and climate finance.
The minister stressed the significance of an inclusive international trading system based on rules and fairness, with the World Trade Organisation playing a central role. He emphasized the need to address challenges such as non-market practices and supply chain concentration. Jaishankar stated, “Cooperation is essential. Dialogue is necessary. Reform is overdue,” underscoring the current global message.
The ongoing two-day meeting, a key engagement under India’s BRICS chairship, is set to influence the agenda for the upcoming BRICS Leaders’ Summit later this year. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during a meeting with BRICS Foreign Ministers and Heads of Delegation, expressed India’s commitment to strengthening multilateralism, promoting sustainable development, enhancing economic resilience, and fostering a more inclusive global order.
