External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, along with Jamaican PM Andrew Holness, unveiled an electronic scoreboard donated by India to Sabina Park in Kingston. This gesture symbolizes the strong cultural ties and future collaborations between the two nations. Jaishankar expressed, “The India-Jamaica story is one of runs, respect, and friendship,” emphasizing the significance of the gift.
During the event, Jaishankar highlighted the hope for many successful innings ahead, including the enduring friendship between India and Jamaica. He also acknowledged the absence of Jamaican cricket legend Chris Gayle at the ceremony. Additionally, Jaishankar engaged with the Indian diaspora in Jamaica, discussing the advancements India has achieved across various sectors.
The visit included a stop at the historic Old Harbour, where the first Indian immigrants arrived in Jamaica over 180 years ago. Jaishankar interacted with members of the Indian diaspora, witnessing their efforts in preserving their culture, traditions, and identity. He expressed gratitude to Ministers Olivia ‘Babsy’ Grange and Edmund Bartlett for their presence and support.
Jaishankar’s itinerary also includes visits to Suriname and Trinidad and Tobago, countries with a special connection to India due to the presence of Girmitiya communities. The term ‘Girmitiyas’ refers to Indian indentured laborers who migrated to British colonies in the 19th century, eventually settling there.
