External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar unveiled a fruit processing facility in Paramaribo, Suriname, supported by India’s financial aid. The project, part of a USD 1 million grant for Small and Medium Enterprises, highlights India’s partnership with Suriname and the Global South. Jaishankar emphasized India’s commitment to cooperation through tangible projects like this one, showcasing the bond between the two nations.
The facility, constructed with Indian assistance, symbolizes a dedication to enhancing value and self-sufficiency, reinforcing India’s role as a trusted development ally of Suriname. Jaishankar, accompanied by Suriname’s Foreign Minister and Agriculture Minister, stressed the enduring partnership between the two countries for mutual progress and prosperity. He also engaged in discussions on bilateral cooperation with Suriname’s National Assembly Chair, emphasizing the significance of parliamentary exchanges.
During his visit, Jaishankar explored the Lalla Rookh Museum, celebrating the heritage of Indo-Surinamese culture and the resilience of the ‘Girmitiyas.’ These Indian indentured laborers, who migrated to British colonies in the 19th century, embody the enduring friendship between India and Suriname. The museum stands as a testament to their courage and legacy, inspiring future generations with their stories of perseverance and community spirit.
