Japan is set to establish an office in India to assist Japanese companies in navigating regulatory challenges and enhancing investments in the country. This move underscores Tokyo’s confidence in India’s economic and strategic significance in the Indo-Pacific region, as per a recent report.
The dedicated office aims to strengthen connections beyond traditional manufacturing by facilitating collaborations between Japan’s major corporations and various sectors in India, including the startup ecosystem, artificial intelligence industry, critical minerals, and clean energy chains. It will serve as an information hub, policy advocate, and coordination platform managed by Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
By focusing on high-growth areas like artificial intelligence and critical minerals, Japan is transitioning from a focus on low-cost manufacturing to establishing enduring technological and supply chain partnerships in India. Despite a decade of interest in partnerships with India, Japanese companies have not significantly increased their presence in the country, primarily due to challenges such as state-specific regulations, complex tax structures, and administrative hurdles.
The report also emphasizes Japan’s view of India as a crucial component of its evolving Indo-Pacific supply chain strategy, connecting it with collaborations in semiconductors and clean energy. The establishment of this foreign office signifies India’s potential as a high-growth but complex frontier economy, according to Tokyo’s perspective.
