The Jharkhand High Court has instructed the state government to form a three-member committee to oversee and enhance facilities in open jails. Acting on Supreme Court directives, the court stressed the importance of structured supervision in the state’s open prison systems.

This committee, to be led by the Home Secretary, will also include the Inspector General (IG) of Prisons and the respective open jail Superintendent. The court mandated the government to submit a progress report on the committee’s formation by the next hearing on June 11 for accountability and effective implementation of reforms.

Advocate Piyush Chitresh represented the state government during the court proceedings. The intervention by the court aligns with the Supreme Court’s nationwide mandate for states to establish similar committees under their Home Departments to strengthen open prison systems.
