Right-arm fast bowler Jhye Richardson is expected to make a comeback in the XI for the Boxing Day Test of the Ashes series following his recovery from shoulder surgery. Richardson, who had surgery in January, recently played for his club, Fremantle, and also joined the Test squad before featuring for a Cricket Australia XI and Australia A against England Lions.
Having impressed with figures of 4-35 against the England Lions, Richardson has a strong case for a Test recall and is likely to fill the void left by skipper Pat Cummins, who is anticipated to miss the Melbourne Test and potentially the remainder of the series. His recent inclusion in the camp to showcase his skills to the coaching staff indicates that he is still a key part of Australia’s plans despite his last Test appearance in December 2022.
In addition, Australia will need to find a replacement for spinner Nathan Lyon, who is sidelined due to a hamstring injury. Todd Murphy is a top contender to step in for Lyon, having made his Test debut at 22 during Australia’s tour of India in 2023, where he made a significant impact by taking 7-124 on debut and dismissing Virat Kohli multiple times.
Murphy previously filled in for Lyon during the 2023 Ashes and made a return to the Test team against Sri Lanka earlier this year, contributing with a wicket in Australia’s dominant victory.
