J&K Cyber Crime Department Issues Advisory on Rising Online Fraud Cases

The J&K Cyber Crime Department has issued a public advisory due to the increasing instances of online fraud and digital scams. They caution individuals to be wary of cyber criminals who use fake calls, phishing links, OTP fraud, and suspicious online requests to target unsuspecting victims. The department emphasizes the importance of vigilance as cyber-related complaints rise, with fraudsters resorting to deceptive digital methods to obtain unauthorized access to personal data, financial information, and social media accounts.

Authorities recommend the public to refrain from clicking on unfamiliar or suspicious links, avoid sharing one-time passwords (OTPs), and verify unknown phone numbers or online requests before taking any action. Additionally, users are advised to enhance the security of messaging apps, particularly WhatsApp, by enabling two-step verification to prevent unauthorized access and impersonation attempts. Scammers often pose as bank representatives, government officials, or customer care executives to trick individuals into divulging confidential details or making fraudulent transactions.

Prompt reporting is highlighted as crucial in cases of cyber fraud, especially those involving financial transactions, as it can aid in blocking suspicious transfers and facilitating recovery. Citizens are urged to report any cyber fraud incidents promptly to the police, the National Cyber Crime Portal, or seek assistance through the dedicated cyber helpline number 1930. This advisory is part of the department’s ongoing awareness campaign to promote digital safety and responsible online conduct in light of the growing reliance on internet-based services and communication platforms.

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and the banks under its purview regularly caution depositors against sharing account information, OTPs, Aadhaar card details, or personal identification information over phone calls or with individuals claiming to be legitimate bank representatives.
