Srinagar, June 22 – J&K Director General of Police (DGP) Nalin Prabhat led a Security Review Meeting (SRM) to evaluate counter-insurgency measures and security plans for the upcoming Amarnath Yatra 2026.
Senior officers from various security units in south Kashmir, including the army’s Victor Force, Central Reserve Police Force, Border Security Force, and Indo-Tibetan Border Police, attended the meeting. District Senior Superintendents of Police (SSPs) presented detailed reports on the security scenario, counter-insurgency efforts, and the security setup for the pilgrimage.
The DGP reviewed the operational readiness of all security units and highlighted the need for close coordination and synergy among the agencies involved in securing the Yatra. He stressed the importance of a strong and integrated security grid to ensure the safety and smooth conduct of the annual pilgrimage to the holy cave shrine in Jammu and Kashmir.
Efforts are ongoing to enhance preparedness and maintain a peaceful atmosphere during the upcoming Yatra. The pilgrimage to the Himalayan cave shrine will commence on July 3 this year and conclude on August 28 after 57 days.
Yatris can reach the cave shrine, located 38,880 meters above sea level, via the traditional Pahalgam route or the shorter Baltal route in Ganderbal district. Pilgrims taking the Pahalgam route typically spend four days to reach the shrine, while those on the Baltal route return to the base camp after visiting the cave shrine on the same day.
The cave shrine houses an ice stalagmite structure that changes with the moon’s phases, believed by devotees to symbolize the powers of Lord Shiva.
