The Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) on ‘One Nation, One Election’ highlighted potential benefits of simultaneous Lok Sabha, Assembly, and local body elections. Committee chairperson P.P. Chaudhary emphasized that synchronized elections could save up to Rs seven lakh crore and boost India’s GDP growth by 1.6%. He mentioned that historical recommendations from various institutions supported the idea of simultaneous elections to streamline the electoral process.
Chaudhary explained the historical context, noting that India previously conducted Lok Sabha and Assembly elections together until disruptions in 1967. He highlighted the committee’s extensive consultations with experts, economists, and stakeholders across the country. The proposed framework aims to synchronize elections at different levels within 100 days to allow more time for governance, development, and welfare activities.
The committee’s consultations with economists estimated significant cost savings and GDP growth from synchronized elections. Chaudhary expressed concerns about the impact of frequent elections on governance, economy, and education. He emphasized the need to minimize disruptions caused by continuous election cycles and ensure a more efficient electoral process. The JPC’s efforts focus on promoting national interest and enhancing governance effectiveness through coordinated election schedules.
