England’s Jos Buttler achieved a historic milestone by becoming the first wicket-keeper batter and the fastest player globally to score 4,000 runs in T20 Internationals based on balls faced. He accomplished this feat in just 2,670 deliveries, surpassing the previous record held by Rohit Sharma. Buttler reached the 4,000-run mark during the Group C match against Scotland in the ICC T20 Men’s World Cup 2026 in Kolkata.
Buttler needed only three runs to reach 4,000 and achieved this on the fourth ball of the second over while chasing a target of 153 runs. This match also marked Buttler’s 150th T20I appearance for England, making him the only English cricketer and one of five players worldwide to have played 150 or more T20Is. However, Buttler’s innings was short-lived as he departed early after scoring just three runs from four deliveries, getting out to McMullen off Currie in the second over of the chase.
Jos Buttler joins an elite group as only the fourth player and the first Englishman to reach the 4,000-run milestone in T20 Internationals. Prior to Buttler, Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Babar Azam had achieved this feat. Kohli was the first to reach 4,000 runs during the T20 World Cup 2022 semi-finals against England at the Adelaide Oval on November 10, 2022. Buttler made his T20I debut against India in 2011 and has amassed over 4,000 runs with an impressive average of more than 35 and a strike rate of 148. His record includes 28 half-centuries and one century, with a highest score of 101. Notably, Buttler holds the distinction of being the only wicketkeeper in T20I history to reach the 4,000-run mark.
As a former captain of England, Buttler stands out as the top run-scorer in T20Is for his country, significantly ahead of Eoin Morgan, the former captain. Morgan has accumulated 2,458 runs from 115 games. Buttler is renowned as one of the premier players in the shortest format of international cricket and is highly valued in T20 franchises worldwide.
