Karnataka BJP President and MLA B.Y. Vijayendra criticized Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar for advising farmers against cultivating water-intensive crops due to low water levels. Shivakumar had highlighted the risk of a severe drought this year and suggested farmers diversify water sources for cultivation. Vijayendra expressed concern that such statements could demoralize farmers already grappling with rainfall shortages.
Vijayendra, at a press conference in Bengaluru, urged the Chief Minister to be cautious in his remarks, especially regarding farming issues. He questioned the government’s readiness for a potential drought and its support measures for farmers during the rainfall deficit. The BJP President accused the Chief Minister of prioritizing real estate over farmers’ welfare, criticizing the decision to supply water to Tamil Nadu despite Karnataka’s low reservoir levels.
He also raised doubts about the government’s commitment to drought preparedness, linking the delay in the Cabinet expansion to internal disputes within the ruling Congress party. Vijayendra highlighted past instances where the government allegedly failed to adequately address farmers’ needs during flood crises. He emphasized the importance of instilling confidence in farmers during challenging times and urged for responsible governance.
