Karnataka BJP President and MLA B.Y. Vijayendra has backed farmers opposing the proposed acquisition of agricultural land for Bengaluru’s second international airport. He urged the state government to consider an alternative site for the project. The farmers, mainly from Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar’s native Kanakapura region, are concerned about losing fertile farmland for the airport.
Vijayendra emphasized the need for people-centric development that safeguards farmers’ interests. He expressed solidarity with the farmers’ protest and called on the Congress-led government to carefully review the project. The ongoing dispute over land acquisition for the airport has sparked debates on its potential impact on agriculture and local livelihoods.
The Deputy Chief Minister has suggested Tumakuru district as a suitable location for the second airport, bridging Bengaluru and Tumakuru. State BJP President Vijayendra and Union Minister V. Somanna also advocate for Tumakuru as a strategic airport site. The final decision awaits a technical report from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA).
