Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has written to Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas, Hardeep Singh Puri, requesting immediate action to address disruptions in the supply of commercial LPG cylinders in Bengaluru. The Chief Minister highlighted that a shortage of commercial LPG has emerged due to a recent directive from the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, which prioritizes LPG production for domestic consumers. This shift has led to difficulties for businesses in procuring commercial LPG cylinders, potentially forcing some establishments to close temporarily.
Siddaramaiah emphasized the impact on Bengaluru’s extensive network of small eateries, mess facilities, and catering units, which cater to a significant population daily. He mentioned that the state’s commercial LPG demand is traditionally met by Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL), Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL), and Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL), with disruptions in their supply severely affecting commercial users in the city. The Chief Minister warned that any disruption to these establishments would have direct repercussions on the city’s daily life.
The issue extends beyond businesses to affect students, working professionals, and individuals who rely on commercial food services daily. Siddaramaiah pointed out that establishments such as wedding halls, hostels, and event venues are also grappling with uncertainty due to the shortage of commercial LPG. Recognizing the significant reliance on commercial LPG in Bengaluru, the Chief Minister urged the Union Minister to intervene promptly and ensure a steady supply of commercial LPG to various commercial establishments in the city. He also called for directives to the Oil Marketing Companies to address the current supply challenges.
