Karnataka witnessed a significant political development as senior Congress leader Siddaramaiah announced his decision to resign as Chief Minister, resolving the leadership dispute within the party. This move ends the prolonged uncertainty surrounding power-sharing between Siddaramaiah and his deputy D.K. Shivakumar, which had been a topic of intense discussion and had impacted the state government’s functioning. Siddaramaiah confirmed that Shivakumar would succeed him, marking a transition in leadership within the Karnataka Congress.
Maharashtra Congress MLA Vijay Wadettiwar noted that the leadership change was part of pre-election discussions within the party. He praised Siddaramaiah’s contributions and expressed support for the move towards new leadership while honoring the senior leaders. Supporters of Shivakumar, including Karnataka Sena Pade District President Tejesh Lokesh Gowda, expressed optimism and conducted prayers for Shivakumar to assume the role of Chief Minister.
The anticipation for the leadership shift was evident among Congress workers, with party member Uma Shankar expressing confidence in Shivakumar’s imminent oath-taking as Chief Minister. Earlier in the day, Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar held a crucial breakfast meeting at the Chief Minister’s official residence in Bengaluru, signaling significant political developments and fueling speculation over the impending change in leadership.
