Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister G. Parameshwara shared his journey in leadership, expressing regret over missing out on the Chief Minister position thrice, including during the recent Congress government formation where he was appointed Deputy Chief Minister while D.K. Shivakumar was considered for the top role. Parameshwara reflected on his defeat in the 2013 Assembly election, believing it paved the way for Siddaramaiah to become Chief Minister.
He mentioned the 2018 scenario where despite Congress winning more seats, a coalition government with JD(S) led to H.D. Kumaraswamy becoming Chief Minister due to political circumstances. Parameshwara expressed his disappointment at not being chosen for the Chief Minister role despite his attempts and confidence, emphasizing that political decisions hinge on various factors.
Parameshwara disclosed that he had informed the party leadership that if not considered for the Chief Minister position, he would step aside, highlighting the responsibilities that come with political office. He stressed the importance of responsibility and discipline in politics, cautioning colleagues to be mindful of their actions as they are under public scrutiny.
Amid reports of the Congress party potentially projecting D.K. Shivakumar as its Chief Ministerial candidate for the 2028 Karnataka Assembly elections, Parameshwara’s statements have raised concerns within the party leadership. Being a prominent Dalit leader, any perceived sidelining of Parameshwara could have negative implications on key voter groups.
