Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar celebrated 1,000 days of the Congress-led Karnataka government by expressing confidence in winning 141 seats in the upcoming Assembly elections. At an event in Haveri, he introduced a new “Land Guarantee” in addition to the existing five guarantees promised earlier. Shivakumar also mentioned a possible seventh guarantee, the “Water Guarantee,” pending approval for key irrigation projects.
Shivakumar emphasized the government’s efforts in regularizing land records for over 1,00,000 individuals who lacked proper documentation. He announced compensation plans of Rs 35–40 lakh for farmers affected by the Upper Krishna Project. The government is actively pursuing the Mekedatu project on the Cauvery river, with legal consultations ongoing for the Detailed Project Report.
The Deputy CM addressed delays in the Mahadayi project due to pending approvals from the Union Forest Department, impacting irrigation and drinking water supply schemes. He expressed optimism for approvals to enhance water supply in drought-prone regions. Through various projects, including Krishna, Cauvery, and Mahadayi, the government aims to uplift farmers and ensure sustainable water resources.
Shivakumar highlighted the Energy Department’s annual expenditure of Rs 20,000 crore to provide free electricity to agricultural pump sets. Confident in securing 141 seats in the next election, he praised recent bypoll victories that strengthened Congress’ position in new constituencies. The government’s welfare schemes, benefiting women, households, and youth, were lauded, contrasting with the alleged lack of similar programs by opposition parties.
Despite completing 1,000 days in office, Shivakumar’s event coincided with a dam safety conference, delaying the celebration to Saturday. Notably, he left the stage during Chief Minister Siddaramaiah’s speech, amid calls for Siddaramaiah’s continued leadership. Reports suggest underlying tensions between the leaders, although no official statement has been issued.
