In an effort to alleviate academic stress on SSLC students in Karnataka, Education Minister S. Madhu Bangarappa unveiled significant reforms. The minister disclosed that the ‘third language’ in SSLC exams will now be graded, eliminating the pass or fail system previously in place for this subject. Marks in the third language will no longer contribute to the final result, with students receiving grades like A, B, C, or D.
This grading system will encompass all third languages in the curriculum, including Hindi, Sanskrit, Tulu, Marathi, and Arabic. Additionally, Moral Science will be introduced for students, with free textbooks provided by the government starting this academic year. The initiative aims to foster responsible citizenship among students.
Addressing concerns about social media use among students, Bangarappa mentioned a proposal discussed in the Assembly to restrict social media access for children under 16, garnering broad support. He emphasized the shared responsibility of parents in monitoring their children’s mobile phone usage, stating that this issue cannot be solely addressed by the government.
The minister reiterated the government’s commitment to enhancing government schools, ensuring transparency, and easing exam pressure on students. To this end, a system of conducting three annual exams has been implemented, allowing students to retain their highest scores. The proposal to limit social media access for children under 16, prioritizing students’ mental well-being and future prospects, was also highlighted as a crucial step supported across party lines.
