Tax collection by gram panchayats in Karnataka has been on the rise, reaching a total of Rs 1,560.76 crore, according to Priyank Kharge, the Minister of Rural Development and Panchayat Raj, and Information Technology and Biotechnology. The state’s 5,943 gram panchayats have excelled in tax collection and revenue mobilization this year, surpassing previous records. Karnataka was recognized nationally last year for its exceptional performance in tax collection and revenue mobilization.
Kharge highlighted that in the financial years 2024–25 and 2025–26, the gram panchayats collected Rs 1,272.54 crore and Rs 1,382.57 crore, respectively, setting new records. This achievement, representing 80% and 89% of the current demand, reflects effective governance, stringent rule enforcement, and an enhanced tax collection system. The success was attributed to extensive awareness campaigns, tax drives, and ongoing efforts to enhance collection methods.
The Minister commended the collective efforts of officials, from gram panchayat bill collectors to higher authorities, for their contributions to this success. Over the past three years, tax collection has shown consistent growth under the current government, with every rupee collected being reinvested in rural areas for public projects, services, and local development. Notably, Raichur district surpassed its tax target by 129%, while 11 districts in Karnataka exceeded 100% tax collection.
