Karnataka’s Minister for Women and Child Welfare, Laxmi Hebbalkar, criticized the BJP for falsely portraying the Congress as anti-women and exploiting women’s reservation for political motives. Speaking at a press conference in Belagavi, Hebbalkar defended the Congress, emphasizing its historical commitment to empowering women and advocating for women’s reservation.
She dismissed the BJP’s accusations as unfounded attempts to deceive the public and highlighted the Congress’s significant role in promoting women’s empowerment and advocating for a 33 percent reservation for women. Hebbalkar questioned the BJP’s sincerity regarding the Women’s Reservation Bill of 2023, alleging that the party was using the issue opportunistically before elections.
Accusing the BJP of using women’s reservation as a pretext for constituency delimitation, Hebbalkar reiterated Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s stance against linking reservation with delimitation. She also criticized the BJP for its silence on issues like violence against women in Manipur and alleged that the party holds regressive views on women’s roles in society.
