The Kerala High Court has instructed the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to take charge of investigating a series of child deaths in Palakkad district spanning 13 years. Concerns were raised over irregularities in the handling of at least one case, leading to this decision. The court directed the transfer of a specific case from the state Crime Branch to the CBI after noting discrepancies in the investigation.
The court emphasized the need for a thorough probe into the unnatural deaths of children in the district. It mandated the Crime Branch to promptly hand over all case-related records, including post-mortem reports, to the CBI. Additionally, the CBI was asked to provide a report on 23 cases involving child deaths as listed by the state government and confirmed by the district police chief.
Not only focused on investigations, but the court also stressed the importance of enhancing child protection mechanisms in the State. It highlighted the significance of preventive measures to address concerns surrounding the child deaths reported over the years. The court also outlined various initiatives to strengthen child rights awareness and protection programs across Kerala.
