The Kerala High Court expressed serious concerns in the Sabarimala gold theft case, suggesting a systematic removal of gold plates from Lord Ayyappa’s sanctum. The court criticized the inspection reports, indicating suspicions of planned plunder of Devaswom assets. There are doubts about whether those responsible for safeguarding temple properties were involved in the alleged crime.
The court noted possible large-scale manipulation of gold works, including the gold-plated door panels at the Sannidhanam. The preliminary inspection report from the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC) added weight to suspicions that the original gold plates might have been replaced. Scientific determination is deemed necessary to ascertain the authenticity of the existing plates.
A fresh inspection by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) is scheduled for January 20, with a directive to precisely measure and examine the door panels and other gold fittings at the Sannidhanam. The court emphasized the scientific assessment of each gold plate’s age and quality. Detailed statements will be recorded from VSSC officials involved in the inspection.
The High Court also allowed the SIT to engage other technical experts if needed. While the court acknowledged the scientific establishment of the crime method, it refrained from disclosing specific technical details to avoid hindering the ongoing investigation. The court described the findings as indicative of an organized operation rather than a simple theft, pointing to a systematic looting of Devaswom properties.
