North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has proposed implementing a police system to enhance the country’s legal and social frameworks, moving away from traditional security forces’ policing duties. Kim announced this plan during the first session of the newly elected 15th Supreme People’s Assembly. The aim is to strengthen national security and social stability through improved legal regulations and organizational structures.
The introduction of the police system is seen as crucial for state operations, with a focus on elevating public order maintenance. There are preparations underway to transition social security forces into police units once the system is officially established. This transformation could involve converting the Ministry of Social Security into a police entity, according to reports.
Observers suggest that North Korea’s shift towards a police system aligns with global standards, indicating a desire to change its reclusive image. In a similar move, the Ministry of State Security, responsible for monitoring dissent, has been renamed the state information bureau. Additionally, the Socialist Constitution has been renamed to simply the Constitution during the recent Supreme People’s Assembly session.
