Kolkata Police issued an interrogation notice to Trinamool Congress MLA Ratna Chatterjee, who is also the party’s candidate, regarding a vandalism incident at a local BJP office in Behala (Paschim) Assembly constituency. An FIR was lodged against Chatterjee at Parnasree Police Station following a complaint by the BJP earlier in the day. The FIR was filed under the Election Commission of India’s instructions during the ongoing Assembly polls in West Bengal.
The BJP’s West Bengal unit reported to the ECI that a group of Trinamool Congress supporters, led by Chatterjee, attacked a local BJP office in Behala (Paschim), resulting in tension in the area. Scuffles between BJP and Trinamool Congress supporters occurred during the incident, with BJP candidate Indranil Khan also present at the scene. Following the incident, BJP supporters protested outside the police station and filed a formal complaint against Chatterjee.
The matter was escalated to the Chief Electoral Officer’s office and the Commission by the BJP, leading to an FIR against Chatterjee and subsequent interrogation notice. Chatterjee, the outgoing Trinamool Congress legislator from Behala (Purba), was nominated by the party from Behala (Paschim) this time. The party opted not to renominate the former legislator, Partha Chatterjee, due to his involvement in a cash-for-job case.
