The New Market Police Station in Kolkata has summoned Baiswanor Chattopadhyay, a Member-Mayor in Council of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation, for allegedly heckling and physically assaulting the Corporation’s secretary, Kishore Kumar Biswas. The police issued the summons based on a complaint filed by Biswas against Chattopadhyay, who is also a Trinamool Congress councillor.
Chattopadhyay, an advocate by profession, faced the summons following the cancellation of a Kolkata Municipal Corporation session by Commissioner Smita Pandey. Despite the cancellation, the session proceeded as KMC Chairperson Mala Roy insisted on the councillors’ presence. The session, however, had to be conducted in the visitors’ room due to the closure of the session room.
Allegations of indecent behavior and harassment arose when Trinamool councillors, led by Chattopadhyay, protested at the Municipal Building. This led to a complaint being lodged by the Municipal Secretary and Commissioner, resulting in Chattopadhyay being summoned by the New Market Police Station for interrogation. Chattopadhyay defended his actions, citing his rights as a public representative.
State Municipal Affairs Minister Agnimitra Paul emphasized zero tolerance for harassment of government officials, promising action against any mistreatment. The incident highlights tensions within the Kolkata Municipal Corporation, with authorities investigating Chattopadhyay’s role in the alleged assault.
