Kolkata Police is enhancing its cyber crime wing by establishing seven new sections to address the surge in cyber fraud cases in the city. The initiative, approved by the state secretariat, aims to combat the growing cyber threats effectively. Among these sections, the Organised Cyber Crime Section will focus on monitoring organized cyber crimes, especially fraudulent activities involving large sums of money and fake identities.
The new sections include Organised Cyber Crime, Cyber Security and Cyber Safety, Cyber Fraud Recovery, Cyber Forensic Laboratory, Cyber Crime Coordination and Support, and Social Media Monitoring Cell. Each section is equipped with inspector-level officers, sub-inspectors, and other police personnel to strengthen the fight against cybercrime. The Cyber Security and Cyber Safety Section will conduct awareness campaigns on online safety, while the Cyber Fraud Recovery Section will work on recovering defrauded money reported within the ‘golden hour.’
Furthermore, the Cyber Forensic Laboratory will play a crucial role in extracting and analyzing data from digital devices to identify criminals involved in cyber fraud. The Cyber Crime Coordination and Support Section will assist in tracking suspects across jurisdictions, including collaboration with Interpol for international cases. Additionally, the Social Media Monitoring Cell will oversee online platforms to prevent the spread of rumors and misuse of social media for illicit activities.
