A report by the Kolkata Municipal Corporation revealed that the roof collapse at an under-construction warehouse in Taratala, Kolkata, was caused by faulty construction, substandard materials, and incorrect planning. The construction design, approved for a 54-katha land in February 2025, led to the building of a three-storey structure where iron casting began from the wrong floor, overloading the structure beyond its capacity.
The report highlighted that the casting material used was of poor quality, and the lack of strengthening the base and lower side of the three-storey structure contributed to the disaster. Investigation findings showed that construction activities extended beyond the approved area, with builders illegally expanding the warehouse dimensions.
While the original construction design was deemed error-free, the report pointed out negligence in supervision by officials and construction personnel. The building department cited a shortage of staff affecting supervision in such projects. The tragic incident resulted in nine fatalities and 20 injuries, with two individuals in critical condition and receiving treatment at SSKM Hospital.
Following the collapse, five individuals have been arrested, and the Kolkata Police initiated legal action under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for culpable homicide and attempted culpable homicide. Additionally, a Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been formed by the Kolkata Police to investigate the incident.
