Krishnanagar District Police in Nadia district of West Bengal has filed a supplementary chargesheet against 24 individuals accused in the killing of a minor girl named Tamanna Khatun in Kaliganj last year. Tamanna, from a family of CPI-M supporters, died in a bomb blast on June 23, 2020.

The incident occurred on the day the bypoll results for Kaliganj Assembly constituency were announced, with a victory for Trinamool Congress candidate Alifa Ahmed. Trinamool Congress activists allegedly threw crude bombs at Tamanna’s residence during a victory procession, leading to her tragic death.

The new chargesheet includes provisions under the Arms Act, which were not part of the previous filing under the Trinamool Congress government. The family of the deceased girl has welcomed the police’s swift actions, following a meeting between Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari and Tamanna’s mother Sabina Iyasmin Sheikh.

Bivas Chattopadhyay has been appointed as the public prosecutor due to his successful track record in securing quick convictions. Out of the 24 accused, 23 are in judicial custody, while one has been granted bail by the Calcutta High Court. All the accused are reported to be active Trinamool Congress workers in the area where the incident occurred.

Tamanna’s mother, Sabina Iyasmin Sheikh, ran as a CPI-M candidate in the recent West Bengal Assembly polls but lost to Trinamool Congress’ Alifa Ahmed, who secured a second term.
