Ladakh’s Lt Governor Kavinder Gupta has stepped down from his position after serving for just eight months. Gupta, who became the third LG of the Union Territory on July 18, 2025, faced mounting unrest during his tenure. Various groups in the region, including the Leh Apex Body and Kargil Democratic Alliance, have been advocating for statehood, Sixth Schedule protections, and job reservations for locals.
Reports indicate that Gupta encountered public dissatisfaction during a recent visit to a local monastery. A veteran politician, Gupta, 66, has a long history in various political roles. He started his political journey at a young age by joining the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh and has held significant positions within the Bharatiya Janata Party.
Gupta’s political career includes being elected as the Mayor of Jammu for three consecutive terms and serving as the Deputy Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir. However, his most recent resignation comes amidst a backdrop of political changes and challenges in the region.
