Officers at Sagardighi Police Station in West Bengal’s Murshidabad district discovered a significant cache of firearms, cartridges, and magazines at the residence of a Trinamool Congress leader. The leader managed to evade capture by fleeing over a boundary wall as the police operation unfolded. However, authorities apprehended two individuals linked to the incident.
Authorities are probing the reasons behind storing such a substantial amount of firearms and ammunition at the leader’s residence. The arrested individuals were presented before the Jangipur Sub-Divisional Court, which remanded them to five days of police custody. A search operation is underway to locate the absconding Trinamool Congress leader.
Following a change in government in the state, the police have taken action against multiple Trinamool Congress members over allegations of extortion, intimidation, and violence. The intensified crackdown targets individuals implicated in extortion and corruption across various regions, with the Sagardighi operation forming part of this enforcement drive.
During a nighttime raid at the home of Noor Mehboob Alam, a former block president of the Sagardighi Block Trinamool Congress, law enforcement seized two firearms, 17 cartridges, four magazines, and two mobile phones. While two individuals were arrested in connection with the recovery, Noor Mehboob Alam remains at large. The discovery of firearms and ammunition has raised concerns in the locality.
Apart from firearms and cartridges, authorities also found a vehicle, sharp country-made weapons, and two mobile phones during the raid. Police sources mention the detention of a minor during the operation, indicating suspicions that the detainees were aware of the firearms’ location. An ongoing investigation is in progress, with the arrested individuals appearing before the Jangipur Sub-Divisional Court for a custody hearing.
