Leaders at the World Economic Forum in Davos have emphasized the need for unity among middle powers to counter pressures from major powers like the US. French President Emmanuel Macron stressed the importance of building bridges and enhancing cooperation with emerging countries, including BRICS and the G20, to address global instability and imbalances.

India, a member of BRICS and the G20, stands as a crucial player in this call for unity. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney highlighted the significance of middle powers acting collectively, warning that being passive could lead to being exploited by stronger nations. He noted that while great powers could act independently, middle powers need to unite for strength.

Addressing the changing global dynamics, Carney expressed concerns about the breakdown of the existing world order and the emergence of a harsh reality where the geopolitics of major powers operate without constraints. He underscored the urgency for middle powers to collaborate in the face of these challenges.

US President Donald Trump’s recent actions, including threats to impose tariffs on various countries and his interest in acquiring Greenland, have raised alarms among global leaders. European Union President Ursula Von der Leyen cautioned that such actions could trigger a dangerous spiral of events, benefiting adversaries and destabilizing the strategic landscape.

During discussions at Davos, US officials sought to ease tensions, suggesting that the tariff threats were part of negotiation tactics. However, concerns lingered over the potential impact of these actions on global trade and stability. Macron criticized the US for attempting to weaken Europe through tariffs, signaling a shift away from a rules-based international order.

In the midst of escalating trade tensions and geopolitical uncertainties, leaders stressed the importance of fostering greater cooperation to address common challenges. Macron reiterated the need for unity and adherence to international norms, emphasizing the shared values of sovereignty and independence among nations.
